Introducing The 2022 Price Guide Edition |
Welcome to edition #5 of what began with our inaugural 2018 edition of this guide, which marked our hobby's first comprehensive price guide for 1980's newsstand-exclusive cover price variants from Marvel and D.C. — covering the two heavyweight comic book publishers of the era. Subsequent editions brought coverage of variants from Archie, Gladstone, and Modern. And this year our coverage universe continues to expand, with the addition of several of the more popular Warren & Harris magazine titles such as the often-requested Vampirella series (and with these additions we have introduced a new Top 20 Magazines list encompassing the magazines and graphic novels in the guide that would fall under CGC's magazine tier if submitted).
Readers should note that there are other publishers that produced Type 1A variants during this 1970's-1990's timeframe as well that we have yet to cover — collectors interested in exploring variants from other publishers such as Charlton (not to mention other types of variants) are encouraged to read Jon McClure's 2021 article published in The Overstreet Guide to Grading Comics Sixth Edition, entitled "A History of Publisher Experimentation and Variant Comic Books, 2021 Edition" (pick up your copy here). "Type 1" and "Type 1A" price variants are defined below:
Introducing The Variants — Marvel & D.C. |
Introducing The Price Variants — Marvel & D.C. |
First, let us discuss Marvel and D.C. Entering the 1980's, Marvel and D.C. each sold comics through two distinct distribution channels: "Direct Edition" copies were directly sold to comic shops on a non-returnable (but discounted) basis; "Newsstand" copies meanwhile were distributed to newsstands across North America, and unsold copies could be returned. In the beginning of the 1980's, all of North America got the same identical newsstand copies.
But starting in October of 1982, due to currency fluctuation, these publishers could no longer afford to charge the same 60¢ price on newsstands in population centers like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal — i.e. places where buyers would be paying in Canadian currency. For this reason, both publishers started to demand 75 cents from those newsstand customers north of the border. But instead of placing both US and Canadian prices on newsstand copies as they eventually did, from 10/1982, out to 8/1986 for Marvel and out to 9/1988 for D.C., these publishers produced two distinct batches of newsstand copies: a higher cover price batch and a lower cover price batch.
Each batch was produced simultaneously with the other copies on the same manufacturing equipment, so all are 1st print copies (each batch involving only a change of the black/key plate), but the number of copies created for each batch was different, with each batch sized to fit the corresponding market: the Direct Edition batch size was informed by comic shop order levels, and each of the two Newsstand batch sizes were informed by the size of the target market and newsstand sales trends. The smaller batch of higher cover price newsstand copies — the copies today known as "Type 1A cover price variants" were therefore sold in vastly smaller numbers.
But equally important is that newsstand comics were purchased mostly by readers, whereas direct edition comics were mostly purchased by collectors, who then preserved their condition. Direct editions of this era were so well preserved in fact, that the consensus among the Overstreet advisors on our collaboration team is that direct editions represent roughly 80% of the total surviving copies of 1980's comic books. That leaves roughly 20% as newsstand copies; and applying the approximate 90:10 market size difference by population size shown above, we reach an estimate of roughly 18% of surviving copies being regular newsstand copies and roughly 2% being the Type 1A price variant newsstand copies, as we illustrate below (note: the tilde symbol '~' means 'approximately' as these are estimates):
It is important to note, however, that each individual issue will have its own survivorship characteristics depending on factors including the overall share of newsstand sales (versus direct edition) at the time of publication (with newsstand distribution in 1982 considerably stronger than in 1988), and whether comic shops ordered enough direct edition copies of the issue to satiate collector demand (if collectors could not get their fill at their local comic shops for a particular issue, they may have turned to their local newsstands to collect copies of that issue, driving a higher than average CPV survivorship rate). Issues like Batman #423 and Crisis on Infinite Earths #1 have current CGC census rarity of closer to 1% for the CPV, while Thor #337 has current CGC census rarity closer to 6% for the CPV, as of September 2021. Across this year's Top 100 list the CPV census rarity is 2.3% for Marvel and DC issues. Across all Marvel and DC issues where we have photo-confirmed the existence of a CPV, the CPV census percentage is 2.5% as of September 2021 (and here is a link listing the individual census CPV percentages for each).
It is also important to consider that the marketplace for CGC-graded CPVs is focused on the major keys, representing a small subset of the overall universe of CPVs that actually exist. Many of the major key issues were published earlier in the window; among the top keys in our guide, the median publication year is 1984. And for Marvel (which represents a greater share of sales in the comic book marketplace versus DC) the top Marvel keys have a median publication year of 1983 — in other words, skewed more towards the beginning of the price variant window.
Given these factors, a separate question that can be studied is what share of actual marketplace sales do CPVs represent, among the most popular issues where CPVs exist? This year the folks at GPAnalysis kindly supplied statistics for all of their sales data from 2019-onward for CGC graded comics, among the universe of issues where GPA has recorded a CPV sale at any time since 2002 (this universe will therefore exclude all sales for issues where the CPV is known to exist but has not changed hands as a CGC-graded copy since 2002). Greg Holland did a great job of crunching the numbers and analyzing the breakdowns — see his new article here for more details. Across Marvel and DC there were a total of 780 unique issue numbers with a total of 69,188 sales in the GPA data set, 2,365 of which were price variant copies and 66,823 of which were regular-cover-priced copies (inclusive of both direct editions and regular newsstand copies). In 9.8 there were 24,423 total sales in the data set, of which 530 were price variant copies and 23,893 were regular cover price copies.

Introducing The Price Variants — Archie, Gladstone, & Modern |
Thanks to the research efforts of Salvatore Miceli, our guide's coverage universe now includes these additional publishers. Each of these publishers has varying dates during which price variants were published, and there are also different distribution circumstances to keep in mind versus over at Marvel/DC: for example with Archie, direct editions were generally only introduced much later (with certain titles only getting their first direct editions way out in September of 1988), with early 1980's keys like Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #320 (1st Cheryl Blossom Appearance) having had only newsstand distribution. Archie kept publishing their price variants well past the end of the '80s and into the '90s (Gladstone also published variants into the 90's). Read more detailed introductions at the following links about the variants from Archie, Gladstone, & Modern. [Note: Articles are also now available for Harvey and Whitman CPVs, although we have not added these publishers into the pages of the price guide yet; also see the Market Reports & Articles section that follows, for articles covering pre-1980's Canadian Price Variants.]

1st Appearance of Storm Shadow; Silent issue Angelo notes: In 2021 many grades broke into new highs: In May a 9.2 CGC ow/w sold for $2104, another copy sold in May (9.2 w CGC) for $2075; March 7.0 ow/w $440, July 6.0 w $395, July 4.5 w $300, July 3.0 $239 ow/w. The few copies that sold in 2020 were all record-breaking prices as well! Raw mid-grades sold for $500-600! This book will continue climbing in price given the history and importance behind the creation of this issue as Larry Hama briliantly needed to recreate the wheel to meet a last minute deadline! Check out this YouTube video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClpaUTV3qrc Conan notes: Example variant sales at MyComicShop: a CGC 4.5 on 6/1/2021 for $127, a raw 3.0 on 8/13/2020 for $130, a raw 3.5 on 10/29/2020 for $198 Jay notes: One of the scarest CPV's in the run. 1st Appearance Of Cheryl Blossom Angelo notes: In 2021 a 9.0 CGC sold in February for $469, an 8.0 CGC sold in March for $348, a 5.5 CGC sold in March for $200. In June 2020 a 9.4 CGC sold for $1465 and a 5.5 CGC in October 2019 for $200. First appearance of Cheryl Blossom! This mega key Price Variant is really tough to find in higher grades and scarcely comes up for sale. Very early CPV Cheryl Blossom appearances are great investments. Ben notes: Note that Archie only introduced direct editions much later, so for earlier Archie issues like this one there was only newsstand distribution and thus two total types (the two different cover priced newsstand versions) instead of three; one thing this difference means is that the percentage of total copies that are the CPV is much higher when compared to Marvel/DC CPVs. 1st Appearance of Hobgoblin; Came with Tattooz Angelo notes: Rumors are still circulating that the Hobgoblin will be coming to the big screen so it's only a matter of time. In September 2021 a 9.0 CGC sold for $847, June an 8.0 CGC sold for $600 and an 8.5 CGC SS sold in May for $1017. In 2020 the following grades sold for breakout prices: 4.0 CGC for $160 in October; 5.0 CGC for $335 in July; 9.2 CGC for $800 in March; 9.8 CGC in March sold for $4650 becoming the highest amount paid for any CPV on a public auction only to have this price shatterered once agian a few months later in November when a second copy sells in another public auction for $7800. This has become a must have book for the serious C.P.V. collector and/or investor. Ben notes: Classic cover contender. Also refer to my prior note in this separate 10/2017 blog post », and this 6/2021 update » Conan notes: Example variant sales at MyComicShop: a raw 5.0 (no tattooz) on 12/24/2020 for $112, a raw 8.0 on 2/15/2021 for $420, a raw 2.0 on 3/20/2020 for $80, a CGC 8.5 on 12/26/2019 for $350 Jon notes: Amazing Spider-Man #238 is not incomplete without Tattooz. It was printed in a standard, old-fashioned way, independent of the Tattooz inserted later, just like many other in-house or paid advertisement inserts from any era. This problem originates from the fact that the comic's cover mentions Tattooz, as does the cover to Fantastic Four #252(3/83). Ideally, the Tattooz are absent due to the slow degradation of the contents that will eventually affect the paper quality inside. Overstreet Guide listings are confused, forced to respond to CGC's myopic view. Once upon a time, I called Bob Overstreet and told him that the Fantastic Four #252's Tattooz were being used as Amazing Spider-Man #238's Tattooz and that the cure was to list them as same value, which he agreed with and subsequently did so. Collectors aren't sure what to believe and that's how the myth is perpetuated, the myth of being incomplete without Tattooz. At some point, although my original note remains in the guide about the switching of Tattooz between books, this was changed back to the original mistaken listing (including the explicit mistaken statement that no Type 1a Canadian variants exist with Tattooz) with two values, with and without Tattooz. Fantastic Four #252 is listed in the Overstreet Guide #50 at $8 with Tattooz and $6 without in NM-, and Amazing Spider-Man #238 is listed at $180 with and $85 without in NM-, a discrepancy that highlights this dilemma, with Tattooz worth between $2 and $95 for the same useless item, which is ridiculous. Worse yet, the Tattooz are valued at $10 higher than the book by itself! All any grading company would have to do is say ''no Tattooz'' on the label and have a blue label, leaving it to the collector to decide on the relative importance of its inclusion. There is little difference between the mistaken use of the term ''Canadian Edition'' for Type 1a variants and insisting books without inserts are incomplete; thankfully the misidentification of "Canadian Edition" now reads "Canadian Price Variant." Any NM- or better copy should be taken seriously with or without the insert. Tattooz were inserted in Amazing Spider-Man #238 and Fantastic Four #252 and advertised on the covers; Captain America #279(3/83) and Star Wars #69(3/83) were also given Tattooz inserts without any advertising on the covers. Because neither of the latter books are considered incomplete without the inserts and would receive CGC blue labels, it stands to reason that Amazing Spider-Man #238 and Fantastic Four #252 are not incomplete without Tattooz either; the only difference is the ads on the covers, and those are irrelevant as they are part of the cover of the comic book. The only cure to allow for promotional extras, be they trading cards, inserts, or spare tires, is to eliminate them from the nomenclature as the extraneous and unnecessary items that they are, at least in regards to grading a book independently. Any insert loosely attached at the staple is not part of the book. If an item is glued into the binding it becomes part of the book, just as rebound comics exist, but those become a new and unique product that is not a variant. The day will come when Amazing Spider-Man #238 is selling for serious money and the color of the label, instead of the quality of the book, will largely determine the value, which creates an increasing financial incentive for inserting the Tattooz. If you are investing in this book, do you really think half of the value is in the Tattooz? Paul notes: 75¢ variants of this issue did indeed come with Tattooz included; book is considered incomplete at CGC (green qualified label) if absent — read Jon's note as well, regarding CGC's treatment. A VF- Amazing Spider-Man #238 variant sold at PNJ Comics for $160 in 2018 CGC label note: 1st appearance of the Hobgoblin. Manufactured with "Tattooz" insert & sample. 75¢ cover price. |

1st Appearance of John Constantine Angelo notes: This book has been on everyone's radar for good reason and so has the price. In October of 2021 a 9.0 CGC sold for $689, in August an 8.0 with no page quality specified on the CGC label sold for $379.58. In 2020 the price for this issue has been everywhere: 9.0 CGC sold for $356 in April, 9.2 CGC sold for $550 in October , 9.6 sold in January for $600, a second copy in 9.6 CGC sold in the spring for $300. I believe the latter prices were soft and ocurred prior to rumors hitting the street that Constantine is coming to the small and big screen.(Leaked reports claim that J.J. Abrams is introducing changes to the character and getting ready to offer a darker tone to the story). Lets not forget a 5.5 CGC sold for $300 in 2019. A CGC 9.6 variant sold in 2018 for $750. Every CPV collector should have a copy of this book given the importance of this issue. A good number of copies were printed with a manufactoring flaw due to a dull blade (top and/or bottom edge of covers). A 9.8 CGC copy sold in 2020 for $2425 and a 9.2 CGC sold for $400. 1st Appearances of Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady in comics. Newsstand AND Direct Variant CPV exist Angelo notes: Not one but THREE first comic book appearances; Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady! Prices in 2020 and 2021 have gone up for many grades. In 2021: 9.6 CGC NEWSSTAND copy sold in January for $1250, an 8.5 CGC NEWSSTAND copy sold in March for $400. Ben notes: This entry is for the $1.25 NEWSSTAND CPV. It is such an interesting circumstance that in addition to the single-price NEWSSTAND copies, Archie also produced single-price DIRECT EDITION copies of this issue as well (in other words, rather than placing both $1.00 and $1.25 CAN on all direct editions, they produced two distinct batches, a $1.00 direct edition and a $1.25 direct edition). Having observed a solid number of both newsstand and direct edition CPV sales since the time this issue began to "take off" in collector interest (and value), our median advisor value for NEWSSTAND $1.25 CPV copies came in higher than the median advisor value for DIRECT EDITION $1.25 CPV copies this year, so we are presenting separate listings/values accordingly. However: please note that CGC "lumps together" both types by cover price on their census, making it impossible to know how many of their census copies are newsstand versus direct; so the CGC count number you see is inclusive of BOTH types and just gives the $1.25 cover price census count for the issue number at large. Also, see my separate two-part post on this issue: Part I & Part II CGC label note: 1st comic book appearance of Krang, Bebop & Rocksteady. $1.25 cover price. |

1st Appearances of Donkey Kong and Mario; Video game magazine in comic-book format Angelo notes: In 2021 two low grade raw copies sold between $200 to $300, and a CGC 6.0 sold for $284. Other grades have also experienced break-out prices lighting a fire under this book. In 2020 the following grades sold for: 9.0 CGC S.S. Lee for $426 in March; 9.4 CGC S.S. Lee in August for $740; 9.8 CGC in October for $1800. Along with Marvel Team-up #141, Spectacular #90 and Secret Wars #8 this book is a must have for the Spider-man collector/investor interested in the black suit which eventually becomes Venom. Ben notes: A CGC 9.8 variant sold for $1,813 in November 2020. An "event" comic that received immediate collector interest, it is likely that many collectors may have not been able to load up at their local comic shop with as many copies as they wanted, and thus headed to the newsstands to add additional copies. We see an extraordinarily high number of CGC census copies of both the variant (relative to other CPVs) and the "regular" types for this particular issue. Bill notes: A CGC 9.8 variant sold for $1,282 in October 2018; back in December 2017 a CGC 9.8 variant sold for $1,000; a VG/FN variant sold for $107.58 in August 2018 Conan notes: Example variant sales at MyComicShop: a raw 2.0 on 8/23/2021 for $72, a raw 2.5 on 1/28/2021 for $85, a CGC 7.0 on 7/8/2021 for $135, a raw 2.5 on 12/31/2019 for $35, a raw 6.0 on 6/6/2019 for $48, a raw 5.0 on 6/16/2020 for $61, a raw 6.0 on 6/16/2020 for $63, a CGC 8.5 on 5/7/2019 for $86, a raw 8.0 on 12/30/2019 for $98, a CGC 9.2 on 11/19/2019 for $106, a raw 8.0 on 9/21/2020 for $195, a CGC 9.4 on 11/20/2020 for $280, a CGC 9.4 on 5/13/2019 for $300 Paul notes: Example ASM #252 variant sales at PNJ Comics: A CGC 9.8 Amazing Spider-Man #252 variant sold for $1,020.00 on 12/24/2017, an NM+ variant sold for $250.00 on 3/7/2018, an NM variant sold for $215 in 2018, and a raw VG/FN variant sold for $80 in 2020. 1st Appearances of Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady in comics. Newsstand AND Direct Variant CPV exist Angelo notes: Not one but THREE first comic book appearances; Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady! In 2021: a 9.8 CGC DIRECT EDITION sold in February for $1965 and a second copy for $1610, two DIRECT EDITION copies in 9.6 CGC sold in February $623 and $610, 9.4 CGC DIRECT EDITION sold in February for $325. A 9.8 CBCS DIRECT EDITION sold in November 2020 for $1875 on a public auction. Ben notes: This entry is for the $1.25 DIRECT EDITION CPV. Also, see my separate two-part post on this issue: Part I & Part II |

Price Guide Methodology |
The team of price guide collaborators have independently submitted advice on variant values for the top key comic books. The median of those advised values collected for each issue — i.e. the middle ground number at which exactly half of advisors gave an equal or lower value opinion and half of advisors gave an equal or higher opinion — were used to compile a Top 100. By comparing these median advisor values for each issue against the "base Direct Edition value" for those same issues, a variant premium was discovered which helped inform the rest of the guide. The base Direct Edition values were determined by (1) an extrapolation of observed marketplace asking prices for the issue around the research period of August-November 2021, and (2) opinions from up to three different popular comic book price guides.
Using This Guide to Canadian Price Variant Comics |
This guide is presented on a best-efforts basis, but none of the included information is guaranteed to be free of human error; and due to the sheer volume of issues included in the guide (over five thousand), it was not possible to individually verify all information issue by issue or to confirm the existence of every variant by observing a photograph of each variant proving its existence, but we have included Marvel & DC variant pictures with 99% picture coverage. For those issues where we have not verified the existence of the variant with pictures, there is reason to believe the variants should exist; but is it also possible that certain included issues were actually direct edition exclusives lacking newsstand distribution, or had newsstand distribution in the US but not Canada. Therefore you should use this guide only as one tool among your comics research tool-belt, and you should verify information with other sources before acting. Expected variant cover price, for example, can be error-checked by referencing a direct edition copy and looking up the small-print Canadian price tag — that small-print price would then be the expected cover price used for the smaller newsstand batch (although we have found exceptions, such as Thundercats #1).
Information columns presented in the guide are: Issue (and date), Direct Edition value, the expected cover price found on variant newsstand copies, and finally our guided Variant values (all guided values presented are for "raw" copies; all guided values are presented in US Dollars). The final column is used to indicate when the variant for the issue has been confirmed at CGC, i.e. at least one variant copy appears on the CGC Census as of 9/21/2021; when found, we show the number of variant copies on record as of that date. At the bottom of each row, a Note may appear for a given issue for noteworthy items such as 1st appearances; Advisor notes are displayed in green; CGC label notes (when key comments notes were found) are displayed in blue. In the full guide pages for each title, rows are highlighted in yellow by noteworthy value above a threshold. Direct edition value columns are highlighted with a pink circle in cases where noteworthy value disagreement among price guides was spotted and flagged.
CGC census information is presented throughout the guide, comparing the year-over-year census counts for both the main/regular census entry and the variant census entry. The census counts shown are drawn from the 10/27/2020 census snapshot for last year's counts, and the 9/21/2021 census snapshot for this year's counts. We have introduced a page presenting the top CGC census grades for top CPVs. Note that as of May 2019, CGC now catalogs the variants on their census under the name "Canadian Price Variant" while pointing out the variant cover price on the right-hand side of the label. In May of 2020, CBCS released their census; we have not yet integrated their census data into our guide. As of October of 2018, CBCS began denoting the variants as "Canadian Price Variant" with the cover price included in the label name itself, e.g. "75¢ Canadian Price Variant."
The most common terminology you will find in the marketplace for these variants are "Cover Price Variants", "CPVs" (CPV being an abbreviation for Cover Price Variant or for Canadian Price Variant depending on context), "Type 1A Variants", "Canadian Price Variants", "Canadian Newsstand Editions", and older slabs prior to October 2018 for CBCS and prior to May 2019 for CGC will show the variant name as "Canadian Edition."
Example CBCS and CGC labels (current labeling treatment as of time of guide publication):
