| 1st Appearances of Donkey Kong and Mario; Video game magazine in comic-book format Angelo notes: Movie sequel was better than the first. This issue is at the very top of the food chain for Mario comics! If this isn't enough, it's also the first appearance of Donkey Kong as well ! In my opinion, a book that is investment-worthy with more upside potential.In August of 2024 a 9.6 CGC sold for $1422. Jayden notes: Video Game related speculation is growing, and so is the sales volume of these keys - but the Canadians are STILL never showing up for sale. High grade value is currently hypothetical! Ben notes: Something that really strikes me about the Blip series is that it is the only instance I am aware of among CPVs where there exist both dual-price newsstand copies *and* single-price newsstand copies (the CPVs) (here's pictures of what I mean). Sal notes: Another book with HUGE potential. Nintendo looks to have lots of runway with its upcoming Mario sequel / Zelda / Donkey Kong animated movies. If you find this book in the wild, grab it because there aren't many CPV copies to go around, in any condition. | Todd McFarlane cover Angelo notes: In October of 2024 a 9.4 CGC sold for $898. This being a McFarlane cover and the last CPV issue in the title makes it particularly desirable. Jayden notes: McFarlane cover, very scarce last issue in CPV. Tough Black Back Cover. This cover keeps getting redone over and over and people still love it! Hulk 340, ASM 300, SM1 Don't have Canadians. This is THE top McFarlane CPV and the McFarlane crowd is willing to pay up for high grade copies. | 1st Appearance Of Cheryl Blossom
Angelo notes: In March of 2024 a 6.5 CGC sold for $260.In December of 2023 an 8.5 CGC ow/w sold for $555. First appearance of Cheryl Blossom! This mega key Price Variant is really tough to find in very high grades and scarcely comes up for sale. Very early CPV Cheryl Blossom appearances are great investments. Ben notes: Note that Archie only introduced direct editions much later, so for earlier Archie issues like this one there was only newsstand distribution and thus two total types (the two different cover priced newsstand versions) instead of three; one thing this difference means is that the percentage of total copies that are the CPV is much higher when compared to Marvel/DC CPVs. Sal notes: This book is easily the most unnoticed key CPV out there. I have personally seen dozens of auctions over the years where the seller had no clue it was the Canadian Price Variant version. Demand has weakened for all early Cheryl Blossom appearances unfortunately. | 1st Appearance of Transformers Angelo notes: The latest Transformers movie in 2023 paved the way to more movies yet to be released. In 2024: February a 9.8 CGC sold for $3899; Winter a 9.6 CGC sold for $1250, August a 9.4 CGC sold for $650; May a 5.0 CGC sold for $250 . Any dip in price on this book will prove to be a great buy when looking back years from now. Every CPV collector should have a copy of this book given the importance of this issue. Along with Marvel Team-up #141, Spectacular #90 and Secret Wars #8 this book is a must have for the Spider-man collector/investor interested in the black suit which eventually becomes Venom. Ben notes: Whenever new-to-CPVs collectors ask me for my opinion on which CPV to collect first, ASM 252 is my answer and here's why. As an "event" comic that received immediate collector interest, it is likely that many collectors may have not been able to load up at their local comic shop with as many copies as they wanted, and thus headed to the newsstands to add additional copies. As a result we see an extraordinarily high number of CGC census copies of both the variant (relative to other CPVs) and the "regular" types for this particular issue. This means a new CPV collector will find it much easier / less frustrating to actually find a suitable CPV copy for their collection making it a great first CPV target (also see Thor 337). | Ben notes: Final issue, and extremely hard to find as the CPV. As mentioned in my note for #1, this whole series has the fascinating circumstance of having regular newsstand copies in existence with BOTH $1.00 US AND $1.25 CAN prices on them, raising the question of what purpose the CPV then served (and how widely was it distributed)? For this final issue, interestingly, the $1.25 price is repeated twice on the CPV ($1.25, CAN $1.25). Anybody trying to research sales comps for the CPV of this issue will have an exceedingly difficult time; I saw none whatsoever. However, I did find a "regular" newsstand copy advertised in VF condition having sold for $49.95 in September 2021. Thus, I'd expect a NM- CPV newsstand copy to be able to find interest at a considerably higher ask. Sal notes: Only a handful of comic series have a first AND last issue with CPV pricing (ex: TMNT Adventures #1 + #72) and most of you know by now how difficult ANY last issue of a series is to find, let alone a CPV copy. Blip #7 with its odd $1.25/$1.25 CAN cover pricing will easily slip through most people's radar as being a CPV. INCREDIBLY difficult book to find.
